Blackfeet Culture at Gordon

By Sasha Cokuslu

The Native American culture has always been a part of history, ever since the Europeans landed on American soil. Students were able to witness some of that culture when Doctor Marvin Thomas invited a Blackfoot Native American, Curly Bear Wagner to speak to his American History class.

Mr. Wagner is a historian and the great-grandson of the famous Blackfeet Indian leader, Red Crow a legendary chief of the Blood Tribe, a great warrior and orator of the Blackfeet Nation. Mr. Wagner, a former cultural officer for the Blackfeet Nation, was an interesting and informative speaker. He is internationally recognized as one of the outstanding leaders in his field, providing education and leadership on behalf of his people and the many other Native American Indians.

Mr. Wagner brought forth his people's knowledge on the Lewis and Clark Expedition and what occurred between the Blackfeet and the journey of the two men, two completely different cultures in a time of unrest. Curly Bear Wagner shared his experiences with the audience regarding reclaiming his ancestor's remains from the Smithsonian Institute which brought about a humbled silence in the room.

To know that this nation and many other Native American clans still have so much respect and homage towards the dead is hard to believe in this time and age of modernization. It seems that the old ways from a time so long ago would be lost but they have not and seems that it will not with the hard work put forth in teaching the ways of the past. To hear and witness Mr. Wagner's accounts makes one feel a need to do better for the people long dead and to have a greater reverence for our ancestors. Work the Runway

The Laws of gravity being defied at the Fashion Show

By Brittany Mangham

On April 5th and 6th, Gordon College presented its annual fashion show in the Student Center Auditorium. The event was sponsored by Club USA, and the proceeds were donated to the Lamar County Family Connection to assist with purchasing books for Lamar County Primary School students. The hosts were Tyrel Johnson, a current Gordon College student and former Gordon student Christopher "Scoogie" Grier, the host from last year's Fashion Show. The show coordinators were Wakiaa Bray and Danielle Lewis. The show was choreographed by Stephani Hackett and the DJ was Tim Wells.

Act I, the international scene, had a variety of the latest dance moves, from some of the hottest music videos. This scene featured dancers: Stephani Hackett, Courtney Halsey, and Maleshia Edwards. Also in Act I, the Player's Ball scene really got the crowd excited.

The clothing for this fashion show was the latest fashionable apparel of today. There were many different styles including what to wear to school, work, ball or prom and to the club. The school apparel was presented in the urban scene with the single "Girl Fight," set in a classroom. The most member able scene was the pink ladies dance. The dancers performed a routine to the single "Check on it."

In Act II, there were four scenes: the masquerade ball, which had formal wear, Wall Street with professional apparel, happy hour, with club wear, and the last scene was wild and wacky, which had weird and fun clothing.

Overall, the fashion show was a success; it seemed that the audience really enjoyed it and are looking forward to next year's show. According to Ashley Nicole Carter, "Overall the fashion show was nice. I particularly enjoyed it, because I design clothes and I am interested in fashion. The wardrobe, the music, and the dancing were all exciting. I'm glad I had a chance to experience Gordon College's Fashion Show."
