Gordon College

WEBSITE ACCESSIBILITY

MISSION: The Gordon College website serves audiences inside and outside the Gordon community by providing convenient, 24 hour access, to up-to-date information concerning the college including its academic programs, initiatives, events, and educational resources. Gordon College will strive to provide a website that:

  • reflects the overall mission of the college.
  • supports the highest accessibility standards and ensures that all users are able to make the best use of the resources available.
  • functions as an educational tool for students (prospective and current), staff, faculty, and the community.
  • serves as the chief communication medium of the College.

Hardware/Software

Gordon College uses many different hardware and software solutions to provide timely and reliable information concerning all aspects of the college and academia via the World Wide Web. The Gordon College website is hosted on a Windows server configuration using the Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 web server. All of the official pages found on this site were created using Adobe's professional website development tool Dreamweaver CS4. In addition, ASP server-side scripting is used to create dynamic, database-driven, pages that interact with the user and retrieve reliable "real-time" content. Javascript client-side scripting is used for functionality such as pop-up / jump menus.

Web Technology Standards

Webpages contained within this site use a tableless XHTML 1.0 transitional document type along with external cascading style sheets (CSS) to control site-wide presentation standards. Using CSS enhances accessibility by separating content from presentation. This site was developed to function with most internet software, but looks best in a browser that supports modern web standards (DOM / Cascading Style Sheets). Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, Mozilla Firefox 2.0+, or Apple's Safari 3+ are the browsers recommended to avoid undesirable page layout and performance complications.

Web Policy

All official and unofficial web pages are subject to the Web Content Policies and Guidelines (pdf) of Gordon College.

Accessibility

Standards Compliant Design

Every effort has been made to ensure that the Gordon College website follows the highest web accessibility standards recommended by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Following guidelines published by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia, all official webpages on the Gordon College web server are developed to comply with the priority 1 checkpoint of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 1.0). By endorsing these standards, Gordon College facilitates universal access to all the resources available on the website.

LIFT Text Transcoder

In a state-wide effort to ensure websites of Georgia’s colleges and universities are easily accessible to a wide range of viewers, the University System of Georgia has implemented a tool called LIFT Text Transcoder from UsableNet, Inc.  LIFT Text Transcoder is a server-based software package that creates a "text-only" view of webpages on-the-fly. Using the Text Transcoder, the viewer can navigate all pages and content of the college’s website in a textual format which results in more effective use by disabled persons, PDA and cell phone users, and / or by users who need pages to download quickly. Gordon College’s link to the LIFT Text Transcoder can be found in the footer of every official page of the web site. The Text-Only link for this institution's website is http://text.usg.edu:8080/tt/http://www.gdn.edu.

Access Keys: Using the site without a mouse
